My First Post

Hello, friends!

Welcome to my new blog. To read the skinny on what this is all about, please click on the "About Me" tab above. This is basically my latest project- an attempt at a university level education in a non traditional- and affordable!- way. I'm not going to just sit back anymore. There is no reason why a mind like my own can't pursue higher education, even if it means thinking outside the box and making a few sacrifices.

But I need something from you. Please follow this blog and share it with your friends. The biggest thing I will be missing from a "real" university is interaction with classmates and professors. People to challenge me, correct me, force me to think beyond what I would solely on my own. Your comments will become an invaluable part of my curriculum.

If you enjoy following me on Facebook- the many heated but polite debates on religious, political, economic, and social issues- then please post your comments HERE instead of on Facebook. This will allow me to access the information at a later date, so it won't get lost in the sea of my "wall." Also, please share this page with others you may know.

Comment, comment, comment!

My next step is to seriously put together a curriculum for myself. You can see what I plan to base it off of by clicking the "My Curriculum" tab above. Right now I want a loose plan for the next few years, and a concrete plan including course syllabuses (spell check says this is the correct word... haha) for this coming "semester." I have already taken 2.5 semesters of college courses, so I will try to incorporate my previous transcripts into my current studies and see if I need a refresher on anything.

Wish me luck!

Mary

  2. Lesson 1 - the plural of syllabus is syllabi.

  3. Haha, thanks Victoria! I did at first type in "syllabi", but the spell check said (and still says) that that word doesn't exist. However, it thinks syllabuses is a perfectly acceptable word.

I am prone to believe you, the English professor, more than Google Chrome's built-in browser spell check though.

  4. Although I did just do some research. Apparently, syllabus has a Greek etymology, and thus the technically correct plural form is syllabuses. If the root had been Latin, the plural would be syllabi. Although both forms have been adapted for use in the English language and are acceptable. One writer describing the difference between the two remarked, "No matter which one you chose to use, you will probably be offending someone who chooses to use the other version." haha. I believe that is probably true. Personally, I always heard syllabi when I was in high school and college. Today was my first encounter with the word syllabuses being considered "correct." I had heard people say it before, but, I had always assumed they were incorrect. Now I know, apparently, both uses of the word are acceptable.
